Blackburn Panopticon

One of six new 21^st Century landmarks for Pennine Lancashire, ‘Colourfields’ is part of a unique arts and regeneration project. Situated in Blackburn’s Corporation Park, the installation stands on the old cannon battery, giving the park a new focal point and allowing visitors a panoramic view over this revitalised Victorian park.

The Braid

The centrepiece of the new Sudell Cross public space, this spectacular 10-metre high modern light sculpture was created by renowned artist Simon Watkinson. The piece occupies the same site as an ornate light column which lit up the town in Victorian times, reflecting Blackburn’s heritage while giving the area a contemporary feel.

King Street Markers

Standing four metres high, these bronze pieces by artist Stephen Broadbent help to give this conservation area a unique identity. Incorporating coloured glass inserts which catch the light, the four markers also feature engraved text detailing the rich heritage and history of the street.

‘Healing of the Nations’

A huge steel and copper circular structure attached to the façade of Blackburn Cathedral, ‘Healing of the Nations’ by artist Mark Jallard has broken new ground in religious art. Hydraulics and fibre optics make the sculpture pulsate with light giving the cathedral a unique focal point.

The Woven Globe

Installed to commemorate the millennium, artist Sebastian Boysten’s stone and bronze sculpture sits at the top of Church Street. The globe is twinned with a similar piece in Darwen town centre and celebrates the industrial heritage of the region.

Transitions

These five magnificent sculptures by artist Ian Rendall create a stunning focal point for the refurbished Church Street. A fascinating combination of bronze, granite, stainless steel, water and light, the sculptures celebrate Blackburn’s social, economic, industrial and physical growth as a town.

Possibility

One of Blackburn’s most popular pieces of public art, Possibility is a collaboration between artist Stephen Broadbent and local poet Julia Copus. Featuring spiral benches and ornate railings, this centrepiece of Fleming Square includes fish motifs that echo the market that once stood on the site.
