New memorial to Alfred Wainwright

A memorial to the famous fell-walker, Alfred Wainwright, has been unveiled on the hills above Blackburn.

The bronze directional plaque and stone relief carving of the author is found at the Yellow Hills in Pleasington.

The location has been chosen because on a clear day, there will be a view to the Lakeland Fells.

Wainwright, who was born in Blackburn, moved to the Lake District when he was 34 and is known for the pictorial guides written between 1952 and 1966.

The memorial plaque has been sculpted by Martyn Bednarczuk and can be reached by following the footpath on the Witton Weavers Way Beamers Trail and heading south from the Clog and Billycock pub in Pleasington.

Wainwright also illustrated his famous guides, wrote more than 40 books and featured in several television series. He died in 1991 at the age of 84.
