Summer holiday fun at Blackburn with Darwen Libraries

If you're looking for low cost activities to keep the children or grandchildren entertained this summer, we have a programme of events throughout August that is sure to appeal.  With everything from animal handling sessions to dance workshops, and craft activities to theatre performance* you'll find something that's up your street, and that's even before you start looking at the range of children's books, CDs and DVDs that are available to hire.  Don't forget to ask the staff or volunteers about The Big Friendly Read, this year's Summer Reading Challenge for children, where they win prizes for the books that they read, as well.

*Exact range of events varies between libraries.

Entry to all events is by ticket available up to 3 weeks in advance.  Unless otherwise stated, tickets are free of charge.

Summer competitions for children

Read and colour your way to a possible book token prize, with our extra children's summer competition and prize draw this year.  To be eligible to enter, children must have completed The Big Friendly Read (this year's Summer Reading Challenge) and will then simply be asked to colour a picture of Roald Dahl's BFG, and write a caption.  Entries from children age 4 - 12 must be submitted by September 30th (the same date as the end of the reading challenge).  Forms are available from your local library on or after August 3rd.

Also for children, Darwen Library will host two treasure trails with prize draws.  The first (July 23rd - August 13th) features Roald Dahl characters, while the second (August 15th - September 3rd) focuses on George's Marvellous Medicine.  Both are aimed at children age 5 - 12 years.
