Crowds flock to Blackburn's new £8 million market

Customers were queuing outside the doors in Church Street waiting for the market to open for the first time at 9am yesterday (1st June).

The new modern market hall is based in the ground floor of the new £66 million Mall shopping centre, just down the escalator from new high stores such as Primark and H & M.

Traders had spent a frantic Bank Holiday weekend moving into their new stalls ready for the opening. Many arrived at 6am yesterday morning to put the final finishing touches before the crowds arrived.

Within half an hour of the new complex opening, in the ground floor of The Mall, it was bustling with shoppers. Stallholders said they were delighted at the level of interest, while council bosses said they were confident of filling every one of the 127 plots in the next two months.

Around half of the stalls were open today, with more set to start trading once fit-outs have completed. The development can be accessed from Church Street, Ainsworth Street or via an escalator in the shopping centre.
