The Blackburn Snowman gets a name!

Unveiling Bertie the Blackburn snowman!

The UK’s biggest snowman is set to take up residence in Blackburn Town Centre later this week with a name chosen by a Darwen Primary School pupil.

Bertie the 49ft inflatable Blackburn Snowman is setting up home on Town Hall Square, King William Street, from December 15 to January 4.

The snowy giant doubles as the UK’s biggest bouncy castle and only costs £1 a go and can hold up to 25 children at any one time.

Blackburn with Darwen Council held an exciting competition for children to name him. Lewis McLeod from Ashleigh Primary School, Darwen, picked ‘Bertie’ and was chosen as the winner.

Lewis wins a snowman party with his friends from the school’s reception class this Friday December 14. Santa will be putting in an appearance to hand out goody bags to all the children.  The group will also have a group photo taken and given Christmas drinks and snacks.

Bertie then officially opens to the public on Saturday December 15. The bouncy castle will be in operation 7 days a week from 10-6pm or later on late night shopping nights. There’s ‘snow’ way you should miss out on a visit!

Councillor Dave Harling, Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “After the exciting switching on of the Christmas lights, the site of this massive snowman in Blackburn town centre should get everyone even further into the Christmas mood.

“It is going to be a lot of fun, there has never been a bouncy castle like this in the area. I hope as many families as possible come down to enjoy it. It’s a big attraction that will further enhance Blackburn’s appeal to shoppers, visitors and residents alike!"
