New Choir is Walking on Sunshine

A brand new choir has been formed by a group of walkers to add a musical and community element to their regular activities.

The Walk this Way Choir has been created from a wide range of local people who all take part in the Blackburn with Darwen re:fresh Health Walks and Cycling programme.

The idea came together after musician Mike Cotter, who has years of experience playing and conducting world renowned brass bands, thought a choir would add an additional community element to the walking group. Mike was keen to put something back into the group after he says the Walk this Way group has saved his life after suffering 5 heart attacks several years ago.

Mike said, “I got the inspiration from Gareth Malone after seeing the positive effect his choirs can have on a group of people. We are keen that some people who join the choir may also then go on to join the walks too.”

“Already 30 people have joined in and we have a wide range of ages from 30 to 80s!”

The choir which meets every Friday evening at Spring Vale Methodist Church in Darwen, is open to all and members do not have to audition. Rehearsals begin at 7pm.

Mike added, “It’s about people having a great evening together and it doesn’t matter if you can’t even read a note of music. We’ll be singing songs that everyone knows and you can develop your skills over time whilst enjoying a great evening with friends.”

Executive member for Leisure, Culture & Young People, Councillor Damian Talbot said: “Improving people’s health and wellbeing is really important. It’s fantastic that the popular weekly walking groups have brought people together who are now sharing and enjoying singing in the Walk this Way choir”

The Blackburn with Darwen Walk this Way Health Walks are ideal for all ages and abilities. They help you to improve your general health and well-being, introduce you to new friends and help you discover new areas to walk on your doorstep.
