Darwen Tower has been crowned a top ten great place to walk as recognised by readers of a national newspaper.

The Tower was highlighted in the Guardian’s Great Winter Walks in the UK readers travel tips.

It highlights a four-mile stroll with great views of the West Pennines with a walk to the grade II-listed Greenway Shelter up to Darwen Tower – a folly built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

It references that you can admire the views as far as Snowdonia, Morecambe Bay and the Isle of Man from the tower.

Cllr Damian Talbot, Blackburn with Darwen Council’s Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Young People, said:

"The Council recognises how much the tower is valued by the local community and visitors alike so we are naturally delighted that readers have chosen Darwen Tower as one of the best winter walks in the country.

The Tower and the beautiful moorland surrounding the tower is a real jewel in our borough’s crown and offers a great tourist attraction as a destination people enjoy coming back to time and time again in all seasons."

There are many walks that can be adapted to suit individual abilities including visiting the wooded valley of Roddlesworth and a Wishing Well before, if you’re brave enough, to climbing to the dizzy heights of Darwen Moors and the 86ft Tower to take in the stunning views of Lancashire.

To cap it all, there’s a good pub – the Royal Arms and an excellent café – Vaughn’s Country Café on route.

Walker Holly Nicholson from Darwen, who regularly takes her dog Popster to the tower, added:

"Darwen Tower is one the best walks, the scenery is amazing. It’s hard going getting to the top but it gives you a real sense of achievement and a feel good factor.

Everyone is always really friendly too which is lovely and the beauty of it all is you can make the walk as short or as long as you want it to be."
