It’s Purple Tuesday in The Mall Blackburn!

Following the success of 2018’s inaugural Purple Tuesday campaign, The Mall Blackburn is once again joining retailers across the nation to mark the UK’s official accessible shopping day.

Today (Tuesday 12th November) sees the shopping centre mark the start of its pledge to train all frontline staff in Autism Awareness in the coming months.

Purple Tuesday is focused on improving the shopping experience for millions of disabled shoppers across the country by highlighting the difficulties these customers face and ensuring measures are put in place to overcome them.

Ask Me Point staff at The Mall are wearing Purple Tuesday t-shirts and Autism Awareness badges throughout the day and Hidden Disability lanyards are available at the Ask Me Point.

The lanyards, which are also known as Sunflower Lanyards, are worn by people to indicate that they may require additional help or assistance.

The Mall Blackburn already offers a wide range of services for people with disabilities.

As well as disabled parking and toilets, there are also Changing Places facilities in Blackburn Market, which are bathroom amenities that have more space and equipment including a height adjustable changing bench and hoist.

Free wheelchairs are available to pre-book at The Mall’s Ask Me Point. Shopmobility Services, which provide mobility scooters and power chairs, can be found in Blackburn Market.

There is a hearing loop, which is used to assist the hearing impaired by transmitting sound directly to a hearing aid, at the Ask Me Point and the Just Can’t Wait Card for people with Crohn’s and Colitis can be used across the centre.

Assistance dogs are welcome and The Mall hosts charity collections for The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, which have raised tens of thousands of pounds in recent years.

Loraine Jones, General Manager at The Mall Blackburn, said: “Purple Tuesday is a fantastic initiative and we are delighted to be involved again this year.

“We are committed to ensuring that our shopping centre is accessible for all and providing Autism Awareness Training for all our frontline staff is a great way further enhancing support and assistance.

“The UK’s retail community really got behind the first event in 2018 and I am confident everyone will come together to do the same this year and in the years to come.”

Since launching its initiative in August 2018, leading disability organisation Purple has secured more than 500 sign-ups from established and up-and-coming retail organisations.

Endorsed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Purple Tuesday is a call-to-action for retail businesses to make shopping more accessible for disabled customers.
