Local Theatres’ virtual What’s On Guide – Everything from Comedy to Opera

Although shows are being rescheduled due to coronavirus, the team at Blackburn’s King George’s Hall and Darwen Library Theatre are busy finding new opportunities so that people can continue to enjoy everything from comedy to opera.

The What’s On Guide on the King George’s Hall website is being updated with free opportunities to enjoy theatre direct from your living room.

The National Theatre (NT) at Home series is offering some of its most popular productions free on YouTube for limited runs. Already, we’ve enjoyed One Man, Two Guvnors featuring a Tony Award-winning performance from James Corden and the five-star production of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, a collaboration with Bristol Old Vic, premiered on Thursday 9 April and is available until Thursday 16 April.

More to look forward to with NT at Home includes Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson’s story of murder, money and mutiny in a thrilling new stage adaptation by Bryony Lavery. Also, Tamsin Greig is Malvolia in a new twist on Shakespeare’s classic comedy of mistaken identity Twelfth Night.

On Monday 20th April,  Fleabag, written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be  streamed online to raise money for those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Globe Theatre in London are bringing to life Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy, Hamlet which is available until Sunday 19 April and then, from Monday 20 April, the passionate teenage love story of Romeo and Juliet followed by A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Sunday 17th May.

In 2016, Opera North’s extraordinary journey through Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen came full circle, in a series of six full Ring cycles. Comprising the four operas which make up Wagner’s epic masterpiece, Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, more than 15 unforgettable hours of music and passion will be available online, in full, for free from Thursday 30 April.

Big eyes, big ears, a big nose and a big tail – look out for Wolf!  A fabulous way to introduce children to Ballet, is Northern Ballet’s production of Little Red Riding Hood with BBC’s CBeebies. It’s available on iPlayer until 9 May 2020.


If all you need is a good laugh at the moment, then there are lots of free comedy available too!

Romesh Ranganathan will be live streaming every day on Facebook at around 1:30pm with tales of his time in lockdown. Jimmy Carr is adding to the fun with his Little Tiny Quiz Of The Lockdown every evening at 6:30pm on Facebook with the answers at 8pm the same day.

Finally, Bring Your Own Baby have launched a new online show, Lockdown Laughs for Parents, every Thursday at 8:30pm. Put the kids to bed, get a drink, grab a seat and get ready for a laugh. They have got together the best comics in the UK – most of which are parents on lockdown too – to bring parents some much needed giggles!
