Field to Fashion by Sima Gonsai and Bhulla Beghal
Do you have any stories about sewing at home, or any family members who worked in textiles?
Were your trends guided by Bollywood films and Asian magazines?
Did it seem like everything in your house was handmade?
From the cotton mills of Darwen, to sewing machines in living rooms, thread and fabric supported our families. Bollywood reigned supreme and the latest lenga from Lahore excited us. Textiles nurtured our evolving lives from the homeland to Blackburn. We were handmade.
Visual artists and filmmakers Sima Gonsai and Bhulla Beghal, embark on an intriguing exploration of South Asian textile heritage through the decades.
We are looking to collect stories from multi-generational South Asian communities from the 60’s through to the present day. Come and share your stories of South Asian textile heritage with the artists at their pop up stand at Blackburn Museum as part of the British Textiles Biennial. These oral histories will be documented and inspire a short poem film.
