This programme by Festival Director and internationally acclaimed concert pianist, Martin Roscoe, concludes the 29th and final festival of a 35 year journey.
Martin opens the concert with Haydn’s ever popular, baroque-influenced Sonata No.50 before taking on Schubert’s beloved Four Impromptus, Op.90, featuring some of the composer’s stormiest and most heart-rendering passages.
The second half begins with Bénédiction de Dieu dans La Solitude, the largest and finest piece of “Harmonies poétiques et religieuses”, with a quotation in the score in which the writer searches to define religious truth, trying to understand the faith and peace that surrounds and overwhelms him. Finally, it seems only fitting that the curtain is drawn on the festival with Martin Roscoe playing the crowning body of Beethoven’s piano sonatas, the great Sonata No.32 in C minor, Op.111.
N.B. There will not be a Pre-Concert talk for this performance.
